About GearWatts
GearWatts is a web app, free during its beta, for cyclists who want to see what their cycling computer has been recording all along.
What it is
GearWatts takes the files your cycling computer writes and turns them into something you can read. Upload .fit, .tcx or .gpx files, or connect Garmin, Polar or Hammerhead so rides arrive on their own. Then look at your gears, your power, your climbs, your maps and your season.
Its main strength is the gear analysis. If you ride an electronic groupset, Shimano Di2 or SRAM AXS, your FIT files hold every shift. GearWatts shows time, power, cadence and speed for each chainring and cog combination, the development in metres per pedal revolution, and which gear you actually use on each gradient.
Who it is for
For people who ride a lot and like to know why a ride felt the way it did. You may have a power meter and an electronic groupset. You may have only a GPS file from a mechanical bike. Both work, and each ride shows which signals it contains.
Why it exists
It started with a simple frustration. A cyclist with an electronic groupset knew that every shift was being recorded, and could find no tool that showed it. Gear data sat inside the file, unread. Power platforms were good at power and said little about gears. GearWatts was built to put the two side by side.
How it is built
- Analysis in your browser. Files are parsed on your device. Gears, power, climbs and maps are calculated there, with the official Garmin FIT SDK reading the FIT files.
- Open standards. FIT, TCX and GPX are formats any device can export. Nothing here depends on a closed format.
- Firebase. Your account and rides live in Firebase. The small server-side pieces, such as device connections, run in Europe.
- Private by default. There are no public profiles, no feed and nothing social. Only you can read your rides, and you can delete them at any time.
When you connect a device, GearWatts only uses the connection to import your activity files. You can read more in the guides.
What comes next
More connections and more analysis. We prefer to ship something that works well than to announce something that does not exist yet, so there are no dates here. Strava is not connected today because its API does not provide shifting data or the original FIT file. You can still upload the FIT files from your Strava export.
